PART ONE opens in 1645 during the English Civil War.
This was a tumultuous period in England's history as once more the country was ruled by an all-powerful King who considered himself appointed by God and had no need to acknowledge civil laws.
In 1629 King Charles 1 decided to dissolve the English parliament and rule by divine authority alone. His determination to rule without the support of parliament was a sure formula for unrest and set Royalists and Parliamentarians on a deadly collision course.
He was forced to reconvene Parliament in 1640 to raise finances for a war against Scotland. It was an uneasy relationship in which neither side was willing to compromise.
Thus the classic ingredients were provided for civil war.
Caught in this maelstrom were men of honor, integrity and loyalty along with innocent, simple men whose only aim in life was to provide for their families. They were forced to resist the opportunists who sought to destroy them. Men who pursued their own blind, burning ambitions without consideration for those they destroyed in the process.
Philip Coverley, 3rd Earl of Barnford was an honorable man, with many years of loyalty to the Crown facing the destruction of everything he held dear.
Seamus McGonagle was a guileless, innocent Irish farm boy whose only ambition was to better himself and make his brother proud. Following the death of his mother, then his father he travelled to England to seek his fortune. There he had the misfortune to be chosen as the innocent scapegoat for Colonel Matthew Farrell's rise to power.
Matthew Farrell, a Colonel in Oliver Cromwell’s new Model Army was the catalyst that brought all three together in an explosive, savage conflict. He firmly belived God was on his side as he trammelled over many innocent lives in pursuit of his ambitions.
The fast moving plot twists and turns as each character faces up to their own survival and soon the predators become the prey.
The story reflects the savagery pf the times and brings in elements of murder, revenge, mayhem, romance, humor and thought proking action.
PART ONE ends in 1660 with the restoration of the monarchy and many old scores finally settled - but were they?
This part of the story created the stage for the characters to play their parts -parts which stay dormant through time until their direct bloodline descendants once more take the stage to continue old feuds centuries later in PART TWO, which opens in 2008.
